What We Did (to January 2008)

Reduce levels of offending by the top 20 prolific offenders, by 2008. Police
From Apr 07–Mar 08 240 offences and 81 convictions have been recorded against the 21 identified prolific and priority offenders (PPOs). This is an increase from the previous year when 181 offences and 66 convictions were recorded. This reflects the state of the programme where the ‘catch and convict’ phase is established but the other two phases, ‘prevent and deter’ and ‘rehabilitate and re-settle’ are still being developed.

Expand neighbourhood policing teams within the borough by 2008.
Police

Safer Neighbourhoods continue to be evolved. At the end of 2007 there were 7 Sergeants, 26 Constables and 24 Police Community Safety Officers forming the Safer Neighbourhood teams. These have worked closely with partners concentrating on problem-solving. This joint approach has contributed to the significant crime reduction that has been achieved in the borough over the year.  On 1st April 2008 the six teams will be expanded to ten across the borough, aligned with ward boundaries. This will enhance partnership working and allow a greater focus on communities and local issues.

Crime and Disorder Audit shows reduced incidence
of anti-social behaviour and increase in public confidence, by 2008.
Police
With the introduction of the 101 system and changing recording standards over the last three years it has been very difficult to establish a change in the number of anti-social behaviour incidents. In 2007 the police recorded 6,552 reports of ‘rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour’. Whilst double the number of incidents in the previous year, this is more a reflection on how the information is captured than actual levels. The improved recording has allowed a more effective problem-solving approach with partners. This has been evident through the Community Tasking and Co-ordinating Group and the targeting of resources to hotspots.

Customer Satisfaction Surveys relating to Police response in terms of first contact, actions taken, being kept Informed and treatment for 2007 show:

  • All Crime:                79% satisfied
  • Domestic Burglary:   92% satisfied
  • Vehicle Crime:          75% satisfied
  • Violent Crime:           73% satisfied.
